Enhanced Electrification of O&G Production Platforms in the Gulf of America   

Bluefin Energy LLC (“Bluefin”) is a development company dedicated to offshore decarbonization utilizing cost-effective, proven technology solutions.  Bluefin’s objective in the Gulf of America (“GOA”) is to partially power deep water oil & gas (“O&G”) production platforms with floating wind turbines. 

Floating offshore wind energy turbines (“Floaters”) can provide stable and cost-effective electricity to select worldwide locations.  Despite technical challenges, floating offshore wind development has been growing for nearly 20 years with solutions that have reached a sufficient technology readiness level for commercial projects.  This seminar provides insight into the technological choices of floaters and mooring systems, together with some physical and technical baselines.  Technical challenges for offshore wind power such as major component exchange in harsh environments will also be addressed.  Decarbonization of O&G production platforms in the GOA will require adaptation of the electrical system on the platform that may also entail an additional system to balance demand and supply of energy.   

Electrification of O&G Assets in the Gulf of Mexico

In addition to state mandated GHG reductions, oil and gas companies in the Gulf of Mexico are faced with rising electricity demand to support increasing power requirements at their platforms, tighter requirements for decommissioning platforms that are unproductive, and challenges to powering future “greenfield” assets that will have lower carbon emission tolerances from the inception of commissioning.

One big advantage of using separate facilities for power generation for green field facilities is that it allows for the removal of significant payload requirements from the scope of the new oil and gas platform.  It also allows for modular power additions and subtractions without affecting the buoyancy characteristics of the floating oil and gas platform.his is a product description.
